BRIEF
To interpret the cultural rise of the Nouveau Riche, a generation embracing maximalism, eccentricity, and unapologetic self-expression, into tangible material and design manifestations.
In 2025, the most audacious aesthetics that screamed maximalism were mob wife, soft grunge, mafia chic, lethal glamour. This isn’t just a style shift, it was an act of defiance against the quiet restraint of traditional luxury, a playful rebellion against the social strata that once defined good taste.
More than a trend, its a bold departure from the beige restraint of old money, celebrating those who seek attention, not validation. We tracked this emerging rebellious energy to map its ripple effect across design disciplines, examining how this bold sensibility moved from fashion into accessories, product, and spatial design, defining a whole new material attitude.
The Nouveau Riche are all about bold self-expression and celebrating chaos. They reject traditional rules of wealth and flaunt their authentic, imperfect selves, loudly and proudly. Their identity is reflected in everything they own, from fashion to interiors.Key descriptors of their emotional narrative:Unapologetic Attention-seeking Flamboyant AudaciousThis emotional narrative guided our material direction, resulting in chaotic collages, visceral textures, exaggerated forms, and theatrical visual statements.
This material board celebrates maximalism through a curated clash of bold textures, rich finishes, and expressive details.Hard materials include burled wood veneers, vibrant leathers, precious stones like malachite, gold mosaics, and brass inlays, all finished in high gloss for added drama. Soft materials feature crystal-embellished fabrics, heavy embroidery, animal prints, oversized motif collages, grungy fringes, and playful patterns. Each element is chosen to provoke, perform, and embody an aesthetic that’s impossible to ignore.
FINAL OUTCOMEThis material board is a visual and tactile manifesto, where personality takes centre stage. We translated this narrative into a material palette that’s chaotic, confident, and full of contradictions. Designed to inspire fashion, interiors, and product design, the board reflects a future where design doesn’t conform, it demands to be seen.
